Learning Outcomes

The aim of the module "Electric Energy Networks II" is to deepen the knowledge on operation and behavior of electrical energy supply grids. After successful completion of the module, the students will have an indepth understanding of power system operation and control. Additionally, teamwork skills will be improved through co-operation in small groups during the projects.

Content

Electrical grids are required for transmission and distribution of electrical power from generation to the customer. Due to the rapid increase in renewable generation, the importance of the grids in system integration is growing. This is the starting point of the module. "Electric Energy Networks II - Modeling and Simulation of Transients" concentrates on dynamic processes. These include traveling waves on transmission lines as well as switching processes in power electronic converters and their influence on the grid. It will be shown how network currents and voltages are represented during normal operation and in the case of a fault. The numeric methods for simulating these processes will be discussed and models of networks reproduced on computer.
