Learning Outcomes

 Understand microbial degradation processes and the impact of environmental parameters onto these processes.  Understand the role of microbial cleaning processes in the treatment of waste water and soil remediation.  Learn the basic methods to investigate microbial degradation processes.  Learn techniques to isolate, cultivate and characterise microorganisms from environmental samples.  Understand the role of microorganisms in the environment for recycling of recalcitrant natural and xenobiotic substances.  Recognise different biotechnological applications of microbial degradation.  Get to know basic bioinformatic tools to analyse microorganisms and their degradation activity.

Description of Teaching and Learning Methods

"Microbial degradation processes and their application" is an integrated module that includes two theoretical lectures and one practical course. The tasks for the full module include two oral presentations (one for the theoretical courses and one for the practical course), two oral exams and one written protocol for the practical course at the end of the semester.

Requirements for participation and examination

Desirable prerequisites for participation in the courses:

Assistance to oral presentations and oral exams are necessary for successful participation. Submitting the protocol on time is required to succeed the module. The course is only for Master Students.
