Learning Outcomes

 Understand what phages are, distinguish replication cycles and survival strategies.  Have a precise knowledge of the primary methods to study phages.  Grasp the phage role in the environment.  Recognise different biotechnological/biomedical applicability of phages.  Learn techniques to isolate and characterise phages from environmental samples (e.g. wastewater treatment plants)  Learn basic molecular methods used for their study

Description of Teaching and Learning Methods

"Phages: biology, ecology and biotechnological applications" is an integrated module that includes theoretical lectures and a practical course. The tasks for the full module includes two oral presentations (one theoretical and one practical), one written exam and one written protocol at the end of the semester.

Requirements for participation and examination

Desirable prerequisites for participation in the courses:

Assistance to oral presentations and written exam are necessary for successful participation. Submitting the protocol on time is required to succeed the module.
