Learning Outcomes

A tissue is composed of many different cell types, each of which can have variable biological states. Rather than studying global processes, molecular characterization at the single-cell level would provide a much more complete and accurate picture of its biological function. Such an approach has been very limited though, since conventional methods typically fail to recognize this complexity as they only consider a given input material as a whole. Recent advances in single-cell technologies are currently revolutionizing many fields of biological research by making it possible to profile individual cells in a large-scale manner. In this seminar, we will review and discuss a selection of recently published studies on single-cell technologies and their applications in biology and medicine. Students will get insight into cutting-edge research-relevant material, train their ability to understand and critically assess scientific articles, and practice their presentation skills. Die Veranstaltung vermittelt: 40 % Analyse & Methodik, 30 % Wissen & Verstehen, 30 % Recherche & Bewertung

Content

1) Strategies in single-cell omics for: transcriptional, genome, and epigenetic profiling 2) Applications of single-cell methods in research with a focus on: − Cell type identification in complex tissues − Cancer biology
