Learning Outcomes

The students • understand and explain the fundamentals of air pollution control with catalysts, filters and sensors • know, understand, explain and present the construction of the systems for air polution control of the engine emissions • understand and describe the basic principles of chemical and physical gas detection, explain the fundamental concepts of sensor technology, understand the technical specifications of commercial sensors, and select sensors for a specific application

Content

Keramiken für die Abgasnachbehandlung: Abgaskatalysatoren, Katalysatorträger und Partikelfilter / Ceramic Materials for Air Pollution Control: Catalysts, Support and Filters The fundamentals of the air pollution control, especially of the engine emissions for the automotive industry, will be discussed. The emission standards and regulations (e.g. SULEV, Euro 6) will be introduced. A construction of the catalytic converters and particular filters will be described taking as examples real technical systems. The synthesis, processing and characterisation of catalysts, supports and filters will be discussed in detail. Keramische Sensoren / Ceramic Sensors The fundamentals of the sensor technology, especially gas sensors, will be introduced. The operational principles of the electrochemical, mass-sensitive, optical, semiconducting, and temperature-sensitive sensors will be described in detail. The application of O2 (lambda-probes),H2, CO, NOx, CO sensors for the air Pollution control will be discussed in detail.
