Learning Outcomes

After the successful completion of the module the students: - understand societal and industrial relevance resource flows and the demand for mineral and metal raw materials, - are familiar with assessment methods for the geological and socio-economic availability and supply risks for raw materials - have a good overview and technical knowledge of primary and secondary supply and production of relevant materials such as steel, aluminum, copper, precious metals, phosphate, plastics etc., - understand the impact of impurities in recycling processes and are able to suggest removal steps, - can address challenges in industrial recycling processes, - are able to assess and improve the recyclability of complex products, - are able to apply the acquired knowledge in a broader environmental perspective. The module’s qualification profile is : 30% knowledge and understanding, 20% development and design, 20% research and evaluation, 30% practical application

Content

- Framework for geological resource classification and criticality assessment - Fundamentals on primary and secondary production (recycling) of materials (e.g. steel, aluminum, copper, precious metals, specialty metals, plastics, and phosphate) - Demand for and use of metals and minerals in society - Quantification of resource potentials in end-of-life flows - Advanced sorting technologies - Recycling-oriented product characterization - Chemical analysis of Critical Raw Materials in post-consumer products - Analytical tools in Resource Management (Material Flow Analysis, Recycling Performance Indicators, Recyclability Assessment, Criticality Assessment, statistical analysis of uncertainties)

Description of Teaching and Learning Methods

This module will be held as a weekly seminar where students learn the fundamentals and the state-of-art in recycling technologies. The presentation of actual research papers also illustrates the research perspective. Exercises show the practical application of various resource management tools, as well as the practical laboratory training, exposes the students to the complexity of gaining empirical data for raw material management. Two excursions are complementing theoretical knowledge with practical experience.
