Learning Outcomes

After finishing the course students will have gained knowledge about scientific softskills and applied mass spectrometry. The first part enables the student to read journal publications on their own, find the relevant information and present them in class. This will prepare the students for their master thesis / PhD and promote their critical assessment of papers. The second part enables students to get familiar with mass spectrometry based proteomics and the application in various (bio-medical) research questions.

Content

Softskills: - How to present scientific results, create publication ready figures, (critical) assessment of publications - visualization and applied statistical concepts Mass Spectrometry: Several advanced mass spectrometry based proteomics publications are available, that can be picked as topic for the presentations (phospho-proteomics, quantiative proteomics, peptide identification, biomarker/drug discovery, cross-linking mass spectrometry). The students will deepen their understanding of the respective areas. In the seminars real data analysis will be performed as well as the theoretical concepts behind the used software

Description of Teaching and Learning Methods

Introductory lectures are given by the lecturer; Additional lectures are based on the participation of students. The course builds upon a close contact and communication between students and lecturer. Individual appointments are mandatory to discuss the content and further questions regarding the student's presentation. The workflow is as follows: 1) preliminary discussion of the talk with the lecturer 2) giving the talk in the class and getting feedback 3) personal feedback of the lecturer

Requirements for participation and examination

Desirable prerequisites for participation in the courses:

Knowledge from bioanalytics: - mass spectrometry - chromatography - peptides, proteins, lipids and other biomolecules Attending the course "Advanced Bioanalytics" is highly recommended.

Mandatory requirements for the module test application:

This module has no requirements.
