Lernergebnisse

Bioinformatics methods are being used routinely by scientists in all branches of biological science. One of the primary goals of bioinformatics is to provide tools that allow scientists to find and correlate complex data from across disciplines (biology, chemistry and biochemistry), establishing connectivity between different types of information. It is, therefore, essential for students in bioscience to gain a basic knowledge of the mathematical algorithms in bioinformatics and get familiar with commonly used computational tools for sequence analysis, structure prediction, clustering and network analysis. The goal of this course is to introduce students to conceptual and practical tools for performing complex computational tasks in the field of biological chemistry. They will learn practical skills in bioinformatics including the use of biological databases, servers and software as well as basic handling of structural data.

Lehrinhalte

The course will address the theoretical and practical aspects of the following topics: 1) gene structure and sequencing: string search, 2) computational techniques for sequence analysis: sequence alignment, BLAST alignment search tool and multiple sequence alignment with ClustalW, 3) transcription: mathematical algorithms for transcriptional profiling, 4) structural bioinformatics and drug discovery, Rosetta, 5) bioinformatics for proteomics, 6) protein-protein interaction networks and 7) system biology: metabolic networks (ExPASy).
