Learning Outcomes

After this course, the student is able to: • Discuss the motivation, merits, and challenges for the Hydrogen Economy • Describe various routes towards generation of solar fuels, and discuss the advantages and disadvantages compared to other sustainable energy routes • Relate electronic band structure to optical and electrical properties of metal oxide semiconductors • Identify and predict relationships between point defects, dopants, and conductivity in metal oxides • Construct Brouwer diagrams and perform simple numerical defect calculations • Describe the operating principles of simple devices and materials based on semiconductor junctions, such as solar cells, photocatalysts, and photo-electrochemical devices • Discuss the merits and requirements of various materials and device configurations for solar water splitting • Describe the role of nanotechnologie in photoelectrochemical energy conversion Die Veranstaltung vermittelt überwiegend: Fachkompetenz 70% Methodenkompetenz 15% Systemkompetenz 10% Sozialkompetenz 5%


1. The Hydrogen Economy and pathways to solar fuels 2. Basic semiconductors properties: energy levels, charge carriers, dopants, and junctions 3. Metal oxide semiconductors: electronic structure and defect properties 4. Advanced defect chemistry: Brouwer diagrams, doping strategies, and nano-ionics 5. The semiconductor/electrolyte interface: energetics and charge transfer processes 6. Photoelectrochemical and photocatalytic routes to solar fuels 7. Photoelectrodes and electrocatalysts for water splitting 8. Solar fuel devices & reactors

Description of Teaching and Learning Methods

Vorlesung (VL): Vermittlung des Stoffes durch eine Vorlesung (Kern des Moduls) Seminar (SE): Vertiefung des Vorlesungsstoffes anhand ausgewählter Themen und durch Rechenübungen. Includes a laboratory tour at the Institute for Solar Fuels at the Helmholtz Zentrum Berlin.
