Learning Outcomes

The participants know the main features of systems at the nanoscale. They are able to understand and predict the changes of the main physical chemical properties occurring at the nanoscale and the main differences compared to the corresponding bulk systems. Thus, they are able to choose between different systems according to the requirements of the application. The participants understand the general procedures of preparation and characterziation of nanomaterials and are able to discuss the advantages and drawbacks of each method. In addition, the participants are aware of the legal and safety issues related to nanomaterials, e.g. they are familiar with the disucssion about the potential toxicity of these systems.

Content

Alongside the course the nature of a bulk property will be explained together with changes occurring when material sizes are reduced. Examples and current applications in the everyday life will be discussed. In particular, in the course, the following topics will be presented: • Introduction to the world of nanosized materials o Overview and basic concepts • Structural and Mechanical Properties o Effect of morphology o Ceramic Materials (from bulk to nano) • Surface Properties o Oxidation, Corrosion o Catalysis • Electrical, Electronic and Optical Properties o Photocatalysis • Magnetic Properties o Superparamagnetism • Nanoparticles current applications o Biomedicine: Diagnostic, Therapy, Drug delivering
