Lernergebnisse

The objective of this module is to teach students about the causes and implications of internationalization and globalization. The students should be enabled to assess the actions taken by multinational companies from an academic viewpoint and to provide profound advice for possible strategic options. Moreover, the students will learn about core topics of strategic control which are of relevance for companies in general and multinational firms in particular.

Lehrinhalte

The course “Theories of the Multinational Corporation“ provides an overview of the phenomena of internationalization and globalization with a focus on internationalization theories. These theories span a range from imperialistic approaches to macroeconomic, industry- and cluster-specific avenues. Moreover, theories which deal with single corporations (micro viewpoint), transaction costs and behavioral approaches will be discussed. In general, we try to develop an understanding of the role of multinational corporations in modern economies and societies. The second part of the module "Corporate Control" focuses on corporate control issues from a theoretical, but also from an applied perspective. The lecturer, Prof. Dr. Ulrich Pidun, is director at the Boston Consulting Group in Frankfurt and gives insights and examples from practice. More specifically, we will discuss the theory and practice of value-based management, strategic planning, risk management, investment management, financial management (funding, dealing with capital markets) as well as integrated management systems.

Beschreibung der Lehr- und Lernformen

The first course has the character of a weekly lecture, whereas the second module part is organized in 3 block sessions. Students have to present one case study in teams throughout the module.

The portfolio examination consists of the following elements, adding up to a maximum of 100 credits. The grading follows the joint conversion key of the School of Economics and Management (decision of the school's council dated May 28, 2014 - FKR VII-4/8-28.05.2014).

Each semester we start with a general information lecture. There we present the content overview and formal modalities for each of our courses. Date and place can be seen from our website. We strongly recommend attendance for this particular session. For each course we also provide a syllabus, which includes information about the per week proceedings of our courses with regard to content, task assignments and required readings. Our courses are held consecutively, which means that we first offer one course in the first half of the lecture period, and then the other one in the second half.
