Learning Outcomes

After the successful completion of the module the students: - have knowledge on methods for analyzing and measuring sustainability aspects, thus on implementing sustainable development - are able to choose the appropriate method and tool for measuring sustainability in different situations - understand responsibilities and possible influences of stakeholder, which is relevant for communicating with stakeholders and providing decision support - have knowledge on policies and legal systems in the field of sustainability - are able to scientifically discuss and develop problem-solving strategies (alone and in a team) The module´s qualification profile is: 40% knowledge and understanding, 20% development and design, 20% research and evaluation, 20% application in practice After the successful completion of the module the students: - have knowledge on various approaches for implementing sustainable development in politics and economy (industry/companies) with focus on environmental aspects, but also considering economic and social aspects, - have knowledge on the procedure of developing strategies for sustainable development, - are able to classify and to evaluate strategies as well as to identify possible deficts (of the strategy itself and concerning its implementation), - are able to develop strategies for sustainable development. The module´s qualification profile is: 40% knowledge and understanding, 20% development and design, 20% research and evaluation, 20% application in practice

Content

- Methods and tools for sustainable development, which are addressed in the module are: - footprints, resource efficiency, Life Cycle Costing (LCC), Social Life Cycle Assessment (SLCA) and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment (LCSA) - Stakeholder analysis and communication - Regulations and guidelines within the field of sustainability - Milestones in the history of sustainable development - Principles of strategies (and their development) - Strategies for sustainble development on international level (e.g. UNFCCC, UNDP) - Strategies for sustainble development on European level (e.g. ECCP) - Strategies for sustainble development on national level (focus: Germany) and their implementation - Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA), Millennium Development Goals (MDG)/ Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) - Sustainable Consumption & Production

Description of Teaching and Learning Methods

This module will be held as weekly integrative course consisting of lectures and seminars. The lectures will transfer knowledge on methods and tools for sustainable development. This knowledge will be optimized and applied in seminars, e.g. solutions for selected issues/questions will be developed and presented to the group in form of presentations (individual and in a team). This module will be hold in English language. It is recommended (but not necessary) to attend the module "Strategies for Sustainable Development in Politics and Economy" prior to this module.
