Learning Outcomes

The students: - know the essential process technologies for organic waste treatment and waste disposal, and their consequences on eco-systems and landscape - possess a profound understanding of biological conversion processes and substance cycles. - possess the ability to review and evaluate new and emerging technologies. - can develop concepts and dimensions of waste treatment facilities. The course is divided into: 30 % Knowledge & Understanding, 30 % Development & Design, 20 % Research & Evaluation, 20 % Implementation & Praxis.

Content

- Quantification and characterization of organic waste, biological and geochemical conversion processes - Process technologies for composting and anaerobic digestion facilities, and also landfills and mechanical-biological-treatment plants - Design and dimensioning of composting and biogas plants or landfills - emission prevention by leachate and exhaust air treatment biological treatment plants - Final storage criteria for landfill management - Prognosis and utilization of landfill and biogas - Measurement of greenhouse gas emissions from biological treatment plants, determination of depositing properties - Remediation and decommissioning of landfills and special features of underground landfills

Description of Teaching and Learning Methods

The total module consists of an integrated course, which incorporates essential technical concepts and principles, and a calculation phase, which supports the contents of the theory and illustrates it with practical examples. The exercises to be solved require the independent work of the students, which will strengthen their system and methodological competence. As part of the integrated course, there will be a space to discuss current issues and topics. An excursion gives a good view of the praxis. Furthermore, information on current incidents related to waste, expert opinions and specialist articles are given. Also the ISIS platform is used as a presentation and information medium.
