Learning Outcomes
After this course, the student is able to:
• Discuss the motivation, merits, and challenges for the Hydrogen Economy
• Describe various routes towards generation of solar fuels, and discuss the advantages and disadvantages compared to other sustainable energy routes
• Relate electronic band structure to optical and electrical properties of metal oxide semiconductors
• Identify and predict relationships between point defects, dopants, and conductivity in metal oxides
• Construct Brouwer diagrams and perform simple numerical defect calculations
• Describe the operating principles of simple devices and materials based on semiconductor junctions, such as solar cells, photocatalysts, and photo-electrochemical devices
• Discuss the merits and requirements of various materials and device configurations for solar
water splitting
• Describe the role of nanotechnologie in photoelectrochemical energy conversion
