Learning Outcomes

The students are able to compare electrical and electrochemical energy storage systems and to choose a suitable technology for a given stationary application. They are able to include economical and technical aspects into their choice.

Content

Different energy storage systems are regarded concerning their electrical characteristics and suitability for different stationary applications. Their working principle and ageing mechanisms are presented in reduced complexity. Cost calculations are presented. Covered technologies: capacitors, coils, flywheels, pumped hydro storage, compressed air, lead-acid batteries, lithium batteries, NiCd, high temperature batteries, redox-flow batteries, thermal energy storage

Description of Teaching and Learning Methods

Die Lehrveranstaltungen bestehen in der ersten Semesterhälfte aus Vorlesung und Übung. Die Vorlesung vermittelt die theoretischen Grundlagen. In der Übung werden Beispiele gezeigt und berechnet. In der zweiten Semesterhälfte wählen die Studierenden in Gruppen eine Anwendung für Energiespeicher und führen eine Auswahl und Auslegung durch. Die Ergebnisse werden präsentiert und schriftlich zusammengefasst.

Inhaltlich werden Grundkenntnisse der Physik, Chemie und Elektrotechnik (Oberstufenniveau) vorausgesetzt.
