The course “Strategic Management and Organizational Change“ introduces the basic concepts of strategic management. Next, the interplay of competitive strategies, industry analysis and industry evolution will be the focus. Multiple industries will serve for exemplification of the application of the previously presented management instruments. Then, we will turn to corporate strategies and by that take the perspective of top management. This includes the important topics of corporate governance, management compensation, gender and equality issues.
The second module part, “Competitive Strategies in Commodity Oligopolies”, which is held by Prof. Dr. Pidun from the Boston Consulting Group, will give an overview of theoretical foundations and practical implications of competing in commodity oligopolies. It offers an introduction to oligopoly theory and game theory and covers the concept of coopetition and its applications, introduces the work of Robert Axelrod on the emergence of cooperation, and illustrates the potential of business model innovation to overcome stalemate competitive situations. Participants will be able to apply the learnings and train their managerial skills in an economic simulation game in which four teams compete over the course of an industry cycle of eight years and try to maximize the value of their respective companies.
