Learning Outcomes

After successfully completing this module, participants have the skills to recognize the phenomenon of “corporate crisis” with its causes, process, and effects as well as evaluate its practice-oriented importance. The students are also able to apply tools of crisis foresight and early crisis recognition. Equally, they are in a position to design strategies and actions within the scope of crisis management as well as to shape the management processes of insolvencies from a business point of view.

Essentials - Organizational crisis: Causes, processes, effects - Crisis management in the narrower and broader sense Crisis prevention - Risk management (in accord with German KonTraG) - Business continuity management - Management of resilience and anti-fragility Early crisis recognition - Operative and strategic characteristics of early warning systems for an early recognition of latent organizational crisis Crisis coverage - Strategies for crisis coverage - Actions for crisis coverage - Financial actions for crisis coverage - Crisis coverage during bankruptcy (in accord with German Insolvency Law Reform (ESUG)) - Crisis communication Management, leadership and behavior during organizational crisis - Appropriate leadership styles (authoritarian, cooperative, transformational etc.) - Behavioral facets of organizational crisis (intra-organizational communication, intra-personal trust and motivational perspective)

The Workload of the module sums up to 180.0 Hours. Therefore the module contains 6 Credits.

Description of Teaching and Learning Methods

The module consists of lectures, presentations by experts from practice and presentations by students. The lectures impart theoretical and conceptual basics of corporate crisis and crisis management. During the presentations by experts the students get an impression of crisis management from a practical viewpoint, for example in the banking sector or business consultancy and restructuring service. In teams the students work on subject-related themes and introduce the solutions in a presentation.

Requirements for participation and examination

Desirable prerequisites for participation in the courses:

Basic knowledge of (strategic) controlling, (strategic) business management and organization.

Test description (Module completion)

The portfolio examination consists of the following elements, adding up to a maximum of 100 credits. The grading follows the joint conversion key of the School of Economics and Management (decision of the school's council dated May 28, 2014 - FKR VII-4/8-28.05.2014)
