A project-course (as part of the X-Student Research Groups) at the Institute of Software Engineering and Theoretical Computer Science, Technische Universität Berlin

Description:

Participatory Budgeting (PB) is a democratic approach used around the world to allocate a common budget. Paris and Madrid use PB to allow citizens to directly vote on how part of the cities’ budget is spent. We study the theoretical foundations of this voting mechanism. Recently, there has been work in the field of computational social choice studying proportionality in PB that establishes that no efficient algorithm can exist maximizing happiness of voters while satisfying proportionality. We want to tackle whether there are efficient algorithms to find good approximations for this problem. We are looking for highly motivated students from mathematics and computer science. Since we will work with theoretical models and coming up with formal proofs is one of the main endeavors of the group, a necessary requirement is familiarity with formal proof methods. Students from other fields having this knowledge are very welcome. The first meeting takes place via zoom (bit.ly/algo-seminar).

Introductory session: The first meeting (04/20/2022) takes place via zoom (bit.ly/algo-seminar).

Teachers: Jonas Israel (Kontakt: j.israel@tu-berlin.de), Jannik Peters

Dates: wednesdays every two weeks, from 04/20/2022 until 07/20/22

Room of the Group: Zoom: https://bit.ly/algo-seminar
