A project-course (as part of the X-Student Research Groups) at the Institute of Architecture, Technische Universität Berlin
Description:
The construction of buildings and infrastructure generates large amounts of waste. For example, in Germany the construction industry accounts for 52% of the total waste produced. Therefore, the central question for this course is how to prevent waste and keep materials in the value chain by considering the entire life cycle of a building and its components. We focus on Circular Construction, a new paradigm in architecture with an emphasis on bio-based materials and design methods to make components reusable after a building’s end-of-life. The students will select five realised buildings and analyse their material systems by using visual narratives. The results including drawings, pictures, text, and models will be presented in an exhibition at the Metropolenhaus (feldfünf) and will be summarised in a publication. The project is open to students with visual design, technical, or social science backgrounds and an interest in conceptual drawing, construction materials or Circular Economy.
