Colonial Spatial Planning
In this seminar, we will have a close look at the social implications of spatial planning with a particular focus on Kenya, Nairobi, and British colonial planning. This rises more general questions about the interrelation between social practices and the capacity of planners to structure them. The ‘exporting’ of planning regimes can be seen as a spatialized form of ruling. Colonial rule was therefore not only executed in a particular space but also realized and maintained through spatial means. The manifold implications, adaptations, and transformations of colonial spatial planning regimes will be discussed during the seminar.
The course will be held in English.
