Combinatorial solutions to discrete integrable systems
A project-course (as part of the X-Student Research Groups) at the Institute of Mathematics, Technische Universität Berlin
Description:
We consider rational recurrence equations on the square grid Z². A particular class of such equations is called 'discrete integrable'. These equations were originally discovered in physics and geometry. In recent developments, the iteration of some of these equations on A³ and Z³ was solved explicitly. Surprisingly, the solutions consist of weighted counting of combinatorial objects (e.g. spanning trees) on certain graphs. In this research seminar we consider as-of-yet unsolved equations on Z². The goal is to find combinatorial solutions for these equations. We offer the opportunity to do real and relevant math research that uses tools from several math communities. Confidence in manipulating mathematical formulas is required, nothing more. The course is open for all students of mathematics and mathematically interested students of other disciplines, especially physics.
