This course discusses the social impact of new communication technologies. The course is designed to examine the current and potential effects of widespread use of new communication technologies on the individual and our society. We cover technologies such as the internet (incl. websites, social network sites, wikis, online dating sites), smartphone use, video games, and other forms of computer-mediated communication. Goals of the course will be:

• To understand the historical origins of the study of communication technologies
• To apply communication concepts and theories to study new technologies
• To understand the effects of new technologies on the individual and society
• To develop strategies for using and managing media technologies in our daily lives
• To provide you with skills to analyze and critically reflect upon media technologies and their messages
