Translation plays a major part in the formation and diffusion of artistic canons and frameworks of interpretation, partly through the persistence of “foreign” terms in the vocabulary of the discipline in its predominant, mostly Western languages. Through discussing a range of artistic and art-historical terms and assessing (or re-assessing) their (un)translatability across languages, this seminar will make visible and accessible the transnational intellectual networks in which art historians are involved, in which they mediate and shape the evolution of art history and, through it, the discourse of the museum. The seminar revolves around the project of a glossary providing a critical analysis of key terms identified and researched with the students.
