Learning Outcomes

- Practical experience in the biochemical and microbiological lab work with anaerobic microorganisms - Overview of methodological concepts of geo- and environmentally relevant processes - Exploitation of geomicrobial processes in biotechnology The module is composed of a preparatory day in Berlin and a one-week practical course after the winter semester at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research in Leipzig. Topic-specific competence (Knowledge/Understanding): 20%; Methodological competence (analysis and methodology): 60%; Development and experimental design: 20%

Content

- Epifluorescence microscopy - Anaerobic work with microorganisms and cell extracts (enzymes) - Biochemical work (SDS and native gels, activity tests) - Isotope methods (isotope fractionation, isotopic labelling) - Mass spectrometry - Direct on-site visit and discussions of large devices for the characterization of microbial processes (electron, helium and Raman microscopy; AFM, mass spectrometry, nanoSIMS, TOF-SIMS, ICP-MS, GC-IRMS, and others)
