During the Late-Scholastic and Premodern periods, empirical approaches to medical knowledge challenged the traditional Aristotelian view of living bodies at universities. These challenges, also occurred during a time of expedition and missionary efforts in new lands in which the Spaniards and Portuguese brought the Aristotelian sciences to the Americas. Here European thinkers would be confronted not only with the question of traditional and empirical methods of science and medicine but also with observations of new diseases and the learning of new medicines from the Indigenous people in Mesoamerica. This course will explore the interplay between observations of new diseases and medicine and the Aristotelian natural sciences in Latin America. We will explore the cosmovision of the Indigenous pre-Columbian medical knowledge and experience, the reception of that knowledge by Iberian philosophers and historians in the Latin Americas, and the reception of Indigenous knowledge on the European continent.
