In this seminar we will explore the role of the body and the environment in cognition. It is clear that the body and the environment are at least causally connected to the brain and enables intelligent behaviour. However, many philosophers and cognitive scientists have proposed that the body and tools such as notepads, smartphones or computers can, in some circumstances, become part of the cognitive system itself. This can have wide-ranging theoretical consequences, forcing us to rethink the basic presuppositions of cognitive science about the identity of cognitive systems and the need for extensive cognitive architectures. It can also affect practical/ethical considerations regarding rights to personal autonomy and privacy.
