Obsessed with westernised regimes and systems, the current debate on Verkehrswende is largely de-historicized and, too often, under the spell of technological determinism. This lack of a chronological perspective could hamper a proper Verkehrswende, which currently dismisses too quickly any social and cultural issues.
Using real-cases from past experiences (biking, 1920s carpooling etc.) and studies of current and future trends, we will frame mobility as a complex socio-technical system, so to achieve a long-term vision of the Verkehrswende´s future. This is central not just for a better understanding of the past, but also to address the current environmental, economic and social challenges in the fields of transport and mobility. In other words, this seminar aims to define how past experience of transport and mobility can feed the debate about sustainable futures.
