Beate Krickel

Di. 16-18

Beginn: 03.11.2020

Are wholes more than the sum of their parts? Or is everything reducible to the fundamental physical? Grand debates over reduction and emergence are playing out across the sciences. According to Carl Gillett, these debates have reached a stalemate, with both sides declaring victory on empirical grounds. In order to resolve this situation, Gillett provides theoretical frameworks with which to understand these debates, illuminating both the novel positions of scientific reductionists and emergentists and the recent empirical advances that drive these new views. We will read and discuss Gillett’s book in the seminar.

For the last session (Feb 23) Carl Gillett will join us (via videocall) for a workshop. For this event, students will prepare short essays and/or presentations in which they comment on Gillett’s book. For the workshop, the whole afternoon on Feb 23 should be reserved (15-19h).
