Introduction:

This seminar discusses the history of China's urban transformations from Deng Xiaoping up today in a direct relation with the Five Year Plans, the Censuses, and a wide series of demographic, social, and cultural aspects – that all mean to compose the Chinese built landscape. Urban villages, urban/rural dicothomy, migrations, gentrification and, real estate bubbles are some of the topics we will encounter during the seminar. We will discuss the national perspective by analyzing urban phenomena through several case studies and then focus on a specific contexts of interest and intensity like Shenzhen and the Pearl River Delta.
