Learning Outcomes

After participation in this course, students should be in a position to: • understand and critically reflect concepts, theories, and empirical approaches in relation to central tasks within the innovation process and with respect to relevant innovating actors • critically reflect upon main practical approaches in designing interaction with relevant actors in the innovation process, understand their theoretical underpinnings and empirical validity • analyze and develop situation specific approaches to some of the central challenges in the innovation process • design an adequate approach to integrating relevant market actors in the innovation process in order to leverage their innovative abilities

Content

As a fundamental concept of this course, we will analyze and discuss different critical steps in the innovation process. This will include aspects of the so called “fuzzy front end” to development and launch of innovative result. The course will discuss different actor roles in the innovation process, from formal positions to informal roles played in the innovation context. Here, different champion roles, their contingencies and performance effects will be a central aspect. This actor-based approach will be extended towards understanding the roles of teams and team specific management. Finally, and as a second main aspect, the course will study collaboration opportunities with external partners offered in the innovation process. Interacting with suppliers and in particular, customers or users will be a prominent issue in this course. Recent approaches, discussed under the heading of open innovation, will be reflected on a large body of research and practical approaches will be put to a critical test.

Description of Teaching and Learning Methods

The course adresses selected challenges and opportunities relating to the innovation process and its actors. We will use case studies, research articles, guest presentations and excersises to provide common experiences and discuss and interpret them together.

Requirements for participation and examination

Desirable prerequisites for participation in the courses:

+ Basic knowledge in innovation management, organization, and marketing (e.g. modules "Organization and Innovation Management" #70202 and "Marketing and Operations Management" #70183) + Students in Master's studies

Test description (Module completion)

The portfolio examination consists of the following elements, adding up to a maximum of 100 credits. The grading follows the joint conversion key of the School of Economics and Management (decision of the school's council dated May 28, 2014 - FKR VII-4/8-28.05.2014).
