Learning Outcomes

fundamental knowledge of theory and practice in architectural and room acoustics: acoustic requirements for different types of rooms and sound sources, theory of sound field in rooms, application of common strategies for room design and optimization, measurement and modelling techniques

Content

Lectures: acoustic properties of common sources of sound (music and speech), subjective criteria for sound in rooms, characteristic sound fields in rooms with different purposes, shapes, and sizes, optimization of room acoustics using reflectors, absorbers, and diffusers, numerical description and measurement of room acoustics parameters and acoustic properties of building elements, computer-aided design and scale models for room acoustics. Exercises: solution of simple illustrative problems, discussion on typical strategies for the design of rooms for music and speech, consideration of appropriate optimization methods for a given room, calculation of relevant acoustic parameters.

Description of Teaching and Learning Methods

The module consists of lectures and exercises and, depending on availability, excursions to representative halls in the area. The exercises are mostly done on the blackboard. Where possible, the solutions of the problems are compared with examples from practice. The participants will also be assigned practical problems to be solved as homework, which will require the implementation of the knowledge from the lectures and exercises in new contexts. The solution and discussion of the problems are to be submitted as written reports. Successful completion of the tasks is a prerequisite for the final oral exam.

Requirements for participation and examination

Desirable prerequisites for participation in the courses:

Prerequisite for the attendance: basic knowledge of acoustics Prerequisite for the final oral exam: successfully completed homework
