Learning Outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students have: Knowledge: • Overview of UAS (i.e. drone) categories, identification of different types of UAS, and matching UAS to applications • Knowledge about the subsystems and components of an UAS including guidance, navigation and control • Differences between UAS Visual Line of Sight (VLOS) and Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operations • Fundamentals of autonomy in aviation • Specific challenges of UAS operations in urban airspace • Regulations and responsibilities for the use of UAS • Operating procedures for UAS and safety management in urban areas • Current UAS research projects Skills: • Evaluate the operational environment and select an adequate UAS • Design operating procedures including emergency procedures for a UAS mission • Coordinate your UAS mission with other airspace traffic • Develop a UTM airspace system for the UAS mission • Simulation of an UAS mission Competencies: • Identify the integration challenges associated with the established ATM system and the need of new solutions • Assess the impact of the operational environment on the feasibility of a planned drone missions • Address the role of navigation / communication in flight guidance and air traffic management of manned and unmanned aircraft • Adapt existing solutions / systems to the change of the missions set in small groups • Contribute to the success of the project doing project management tasks

Content

Lecture: • Categories of UAS and application fields • Subsystems and components of an UAS • Integration of UAS in airspace • Regulations and responsibilities for the use of UAS • UAS traffic management, procedure design and collision avoidance • Current UAS research projects Tutorials: • Introduction to project management and ways to organize project work in teams • Practice procedure design for UAS • Design and simulate a safe UAS mission • Guided / supervised time to work on the UAS package delivery project
