Learning Outcomes

• Gain competence of performing a targeted literature search and analysis based on a specific innovation management topic and selected target journals • Ability to systematically review empirical and conceptual literature and to generate a qualitative meta-analysis in a defined subject area • Develop an understanding of variable operationalization in empirical research on innovation management • Ability to individually perform variable operationalization and related data gathering using state of the art methods and approaches • Understanding of validity checks for collected empirical data and ability to perform initial univariate statistics at a descriptive level • Ability to present research results in a concise and convincing manner to a critical audience of researchers

Content

Part 1: Introduction to selected topics in innovation management, including research practice and process considerations Part 2: Performing an individual literature analysis, including identification of relevant publications, systematic structuring of the research, and developing of combined insights from this analysis (concludes with a short individual paper on central findings and a presentation) Part 3: Performing of a concrete variable operationalization task in a selected current research project (performance of actual industrial new product development projects), conceptually develop an operationalization approach, apply this to a given set of actual industrial cases, collection of data and performing initial descriptive statistics. This part concludes with a second part of the above mentioned paper and a second presentation.

Description of Teaching and Learning Methods

We discuss significant topics in innovation management based on a systematic literature work. Class discussion, presentations, formal peer review and feedback will characterize the first part of the seminar. In the second part we turn towards practical research work, again based on group discussions, presentations, and including structured work with data drawing on adequate tools (coding & analysis).

Test description (Module completion)

The portfolio examination consists of the following elements, adding up to a maximum of 100 credits. The grading follows the joint conversion key of the School of Economics and Management (decision of the school's council dated May 28, 2014 - FKR VII-4/8-28.05.2014).
