Learning Outcomes

The objective of this module is to teach students about the causes and implications of internationalization and globalization. The students should be enabled to assess the actions taken by multinational companies from an academic viewpoint and to provide profound advice for possible strategic options. Moreover, the students will learn about core topics of strategic control which are of relevance for companies in general and multinational firms in particular.

Content

The module consists of two parts: “Multinational Corporations - Theories and Practice“ and "Corporate Control". Part 1: “Multinational Corporations - Theories and Practice“ provides an overview of the phenomena of internationalization and globalization with a focus on internationalization theories. Those theories span a range from imperialistic approaches to macroeconomic, industry- and cluster-specific avenues. Moreover, theories that deal with single corporations (micro viewpoint), transaction costs, and behavioral approaches will be discussed. In general, we try to develop an understanding of the role of multinational corporations in modern economies and societies. Part 2: "Corporate Control" focuses on corporate control issues from a theoretical but also from an applied perspective. The lecturer, Prof. Dr Ulrich Pidun, is director at the Boston Consulting Group in Frankfurt and gives insights and examples from practice. We will discuss the theory and practice of value-based management, strategic planning, risk management, investment management, financial management (funding, dealing with capital markets) as well as integrated management systems.
