Learning Outcomes

During this module students will learn to analyse the dynamic behavior of civil systems under consideration of different physical and social processes governing the system (think of mechanical, fluid, or thermal processes; of occupancy behavior or traffic). Students will learn to model those different physical and social processes using similar mathematical models (partial differential equations) and a common product model of the system. Hence, they will learn to use the same mathematical apparatus to quickly analyse different aspects of a large number of alternatives. Students will also learn about parametric product modeling that allows for the quick generation of different alternatives for the civil system's configuration that can be analysed considering the different physical processes. Building upon this this theoretical framework, students will acquire hands-on model building skilles, by developing own simulation models that they will use for multi-criteria system evaluations. Students will also learn how to program system dynamics simulations to understand the behavior of a system over time. Throug the project assignments, students will also develop inuitions of supporting multi-disciplinary civil engineering design and collaboration.

Content

- review of engineering methods to model different physical processes of civil systems - methods for the combined application of different physical process simulations based on a single product description of a civil system - system dynamics modelling and analysis - parametric multi-criteria system analysis

Description of Teaching and Learning Methods

- Read and comment on selected texts - Reflection and discussion of the techniques based on texts, practice and application examples during lectures. - project work: application of the concepts learned in classes in a project where the students need to model different integrated processes around a chosen civil engineered system.
