Learning Outcomes

Students should: - gain knowledge of biotechnological production processes, particularly those of basic chemicals and energy, in the context of the use of biogenic raw and residual material; the focus is on anaerobic bioprocesses for the production of energy sources (biogas and fuels, solvents), microbial processes for the production of bioplastics, food/nutritional supplements such as probiotics, etc., and the production of biomass for material use; - get to know the microbial and biochemical fundamentals of industrial bioprocesses, and understand the specifics of their application in bioprocess engineering; - gain an overview of current research fields for scale-up and implementation of such processes, as well as the utilization potential of biogenic feedstock including residues; - gain knowledge of process evaluation from an economic and ecological as well as technical perspective, including coupled processes such as in biorefineries, among others; - be able to apply the basic theoretical knowledge gained in the lecture in project work. The course predominantly conveys: 30% knowledge & understanding, 20% analytics & methodology, 10% development & design, 10% research & evaluation, 20% application & practice, 10% social competence

Content

- Biogas processes, biofuels, biosolvents, bioplastics, probiotics, in the context of decentralized production approaches, coupled processes (biorefineries) and the utilization of biogenic raw and residual materials; - Biochemistry, cultivation processes, upstream, downstream; - substrate pretreatment and process integration into material cycles; - economic considerations in the context of competing processes (CAPEX, OPEX, etc.) - ecological consideration within life cycle analyses; - social aspects of the application of industrial microbial bioprocesses; - current developments in research; - Presentation of plants and processes in the seminar.
