Learning Outcomes

The students should: - have knowledge of the design of biotechnological plants and economic efficiency calculations as well as the methods of product development in biotechnological processes. In the projects the students also include analyses of the process sustainability and life cycle analysis. - Have experienced and learned the first steps of scientific thinking, working and communicating through practical formats in an international environment and in consideration of social responsibility, sustainability and equal opportunities. Content

Course contents - Project planning of biotechnological processes: Process of development of new products and their introduction on the market, business plan - Case study of a company foundation for the project planning of a plant for biotechnological production (e.g. plant for the production of recombinant proteins, biogas plant) or for the development of a biotechnological product: market analysis, product development plan, preparation of plant flow charts, design of plant components, dimensioning of bioreactors, demand for electrical energy, steam, cooling water, personnel requirements, economic analysis, sustainability, ecobilance and life cycle analysis, determination of the product price, comparison with market prices, guidelines and funding opportunities

Description of Teaching and Learning Methods

Description of the teaching and learning methods Project planning exercise in working groups of about 10 students. The working groups should organize themselves according to the structure of a company, project the plant in different teams and calculate an offer for the plant construction as well as the product price to be achieved. Lecture event to present the results of the competing groups. The language of instruction is usually English, unless all participants have German as their mother tongue.
