Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the module, the students are able to: - to know the importance of bioprocesses and their principle execution in the biotechnological industry, - understand the physical processes in bioreactors on the basis of energy, mass and momentum and momentum transport and corresponding balances as well as reactor types and their operating parameters. know - to master the use of simple approaches for the description of biological material transformation to master - to master the tools for describing complex biological reaction networks in the metabolism of the cell and to be able to apply these in a targeted way for the analysis and planning of to be able to apply them in a targeted manner for the analysis and planning of problem solutions, - to know the construction and the mode of action of bioreactors, - and to have knowledge of the basic procedures of bioprocess technology and scale-up. The course predominantly imparts: 40% Knowledge & Understanding 20% Analysis & Methodology 20% Development & Design 20% Application & Practice.

Content

The module contains the lectures Bioprocess Engineering I (BVT I-VL, winter semester) and the Bioprocess Engineering I practical course (BVT I-PR (summer semester). The lecture is accompanied by seminars accompanied by seminars. BVT I-VL: Lectures accompanied by seminars and exercises. In addition, students prepare a term paper (Experimental Design). Introduction to industrial bioprocesses, culture media, experimental design, bioreactor design and instrumentation, kinetic models, mass transport in bioreactors, biotechnological processes (batch, fed-batch, continuous culture), sterilisation, modelling of bioprocesses, DoE modelling with Modde, simulation exercises with Matlab. BAT I-P: Cell growth in the bioreactor, balancing, modelling of simple processes, Kla value/oxygen transfer.
