Learning Outcomes

After the successful completion of the module the students: - understand material flows and nutrient demand in agro-economic systems - are able to apply biomass potential models - are able to gather and analyze relevant data on the nutrient and energy potential - know to apply resource management tools such as MFA and other statistical process modeling tool for planning recycling strategies, - are able to analyze and critically reflect the results regarding the sustainable development goals (SDG) - know assessment parameters and relevant characteristics for quality assurance of bio- & refuse derived fuels and are able to derive these from requirements of industrial production processes. - are able to conceptualize and execute sampling campaigns, sample preparation and analytics for heterogeneous wastes or secondary resources in compliance to current legislation and standards. - posses profound knowledge of statistical evaluation, visualization and assessment of measurement values and analytical results. - are able to critically analyses and professionally assess errors The module’s qualification profile is: 25% knowledge and understanding, 25% development and design, 25% research and evaluation, 25% practical application

Content

Integrated management of agricultural residues: - Fundamentals on agricultural processing and mass flow patterns in different agro-economic systems - Technologies for valorization and energy generation from agricultural residues - Methods of biomass resource assessment - Analytical tools of resource management (MFA, spatial and statistical analysis) - Assessment of greenhouse gas emissions and mitigation potential - Analytics of bio fuels and other refuse derived fuels. - quality assurance systems for substitute fuels (heating value, heavy metals, chlorine content) - sampling and analysis of compliance with landfill acceptance criteria or recyclability of various, pretreated waste types according to defined parameters (water content, eluate behavior, respiration rate, self-heating, ultimate analysis, heavy metal content) - quality assurance systems for compost

Description of Teaching and Learning Methods

This module will be held as a seminar where students learn the fundamentals and the state-of-art of management of agricultural residues in different cultural frames, the handling of the organic residues and the challenges concerning climate change and sustainable development of rural areas. The presentation of current research papers will illustrate the research perspective. The students will work in groups on a semester project which will be linked to a distinct study region. The groups will elucidate different objectives related to the management of agricultural residues in this region. The students solve independently a research question on the basis of literature research, data inquiry and modeling. The results will be presented at the final workshop. One excursion is complementing the theoretical knowledge with a practical experience.
