Learning Outcomes

• Understanding innovation management as a corporate task defining and managing the corporate innovation system • Being able to identify relevant managerial aspects for improving innovation initiative at the corporate level, understanding organization design for initiatives and how this affects the corporate innovation portfolio. • Identifying relevant parameters of the management of innovation collaborations, understanding the opportunities for extending the corporate resource and capability base for innovation by collaborating with external partners, and understanding the advantages of managing partners in an innovation network. • Aligning corporate innovation strategy, including alliance strategy and activities, with an effective corporate IPR position and being able to delineate an adequate IPR strategy. • Explaining the effects of services becoming a more integral or even dominant part of corporate offerings on innovation management • Understanding the informal side of the corporate innovation organization and its effects on innovation team activities. Being able to identify and influence relevant parameters of an innovation enhancing organizational culture. • Appreciating the opportunities of new technologies (e.g., IoT, additive manufacturing, DLT) for innovations, identifying the specific challenges for innovation management and being able to discuss the opportunities for leveraging such technologies in the context of innovation management.

Content

• The rationale behind corporate innovation strategies, their dimensions, contingencies, and strategic governance issues. • Management of the corporate deal flow with respect to innovation initiatives, initiative sources and cognitive foundations for initiative generation, initiative process fomalization and innovation portfolio management • Management of collaboration and cooperation in networks • IPR strategies • Services, servitization, and the effect on innovation management • Informal organization and innovation enhancing organizational culture • Innovation management and new technological developments

Description of Teaching and Learning Methods

The course adresses selected challenges and opportunities relating to managing corporate innovation. We will use case studies, research articles, guest presentations and excersises to provide common experiences and discuss and interpret them together.

Desirable prerequisites for participation in the courses:

Fundamentals of innovation management, organization, and technology management (e.g. modules "Organization and Innovation Management" #70202 and "Technology Management" #70248)

Test description (Module completion)

The portfolio examination consists of the following elements, adding up to a maximum of 100 credits. The grading follows the joint conversion key of the School of Economics and Management (decision of the school's council dated May 28, 2014 - FKR VII-4/8-28.05.2014).
