Learning Outcomes

After participating in this course, students should be in a position to: (1) understand and critically reflect upon key concepts and theories in strategic innovation management (2) understand and critically discuss conceptual and empirical research papers on strategic innovation management, (3) analyze and develop adequate solutions to some of the practical challenges of strategic innovation management, and (4) apply important tools in strategic innovation management intelligently based on a thorough understanding of their respective strengths and weaknesses.

Content

This course provides a case- and/or research-based introduction to strategic technology- and innovation management. This involves revisiting some of the foundational concepts and debates in strategic management and examining key strategic decisions at the heart of technology and innovation management. These might pertain to the selection of technology fields, the composition of innovation portfolios, the timing of technology development initiatives, the setting of industry standards, the implementation of modular designs, the orchestration of strategic alliances, the protection of intellectual property or the adaptation to rapid technological change. As part of this course, participants will have the opportunity to become familiar with case studies and/or research papers related to these topics.

The Workload of the module sums up to 180.0 Hours. Therefore the module contains 6 Credits.

Description of Teaching and Learning Methods

The lecture imparts know-how in practical innovation management on the one hand. On the other hand latest research results concerning individuals and groups in innovation management are discussed with the audience. In the exercise students work in small groups on business cases. These cases illustrate the concepts and problems that the students know from the lecture. In the seminar students work on a special topic for 3 month and present their findings in the seminar in the second half of the semester.

The portfolio examination consists of the following elements, adding up to a maximum of 100 credits. The grading follows the joint conversion key of the School of Economics and Management (decision of the school's council dated May 28, 2014 - FKR VII-4/8-28.05.2014).
