Learning Outcomes

After the successful completion of this module, students have an understanding of the tasks related to production and operations management in the automotive industry. They are able to apply qualitative and quantitative methods to tackle problems arising in strategical, tactical and operational planning situations and know how to make appropriate use of related software. Considering state-of-the-art research, they are able to critically assess the potentials and limitations of different planning methods and are qualified to adapt them to new planning situations.

Content

The module gives an overview of the most important tasks related to production and operations management in the automotive industry and discusses how techniques from forecasting and optimization can be used to provide computer-based decision support. It presents specific challenges automotive managers face in strategical, tactical and operational planning situations and discusses state-of-the-art concepts and methods to tackle these challenges. Case studies and various examples from industry are used for illustration and exercise reasons. By adopting and extending provided model formulations, students improve their skills in the application of methods from operations research to industry problems.

Description of Teaching and Learning Methods

The given module is an integrated course consisting of teaching, exercise and discussion elements. In the lecture sessions the covered topics will be motivated using applications from industry. Basic solution concepts and methods will be covered in theory and will be discussed with the students. In the practice sessions the content of the lectures will be revisited. Students will deepen their knowledge through case studies and hands-on calculation exercises.
